SGX Bull Charge Challenge Investors’ Insights: Brian Halim

Recently, we got in touch with Brian Halim, one of the prominent financial bloggers here in Singapore and also a contestant of the SGX Bull ChargeStock Challenge, to understand more about his investing strategies, his philosophy, and what motivated him to get started in the first place.

With less than a month to go, some of the top participants have achieved double digit portfolio returns within the timeframe of just 3 months. Impressive! For those who are wondering, the SGX Bull Charge Stock Challenge is only open to professionals and influencers in the finance industry.

But the question we should really ask is, how did they do it? What is their investment or trading philosophy? Who inspired them? What styles of investing or trading are they using?

We believe that every one of these professionals have different styles of investing, expertise in different types of securities and also have their own story to tell.

This is what Brian had to say:

Tell me more about yourself and how did you get started in investing or trading?

Like most of the people, I am a normal employee who works by the day from 9 to 6 in the financial industry. During my free time, I would blog occasionally at http://www.foreverfinancialfreedom.blogspot.com to journal my thoughts on topics that are of my interests, i.e usually catered for investing strategy, portfolio management or personal finance. I am married with two young kids aged 4 and 1.

I started investing sometime in 2010 not long after I started working and have been trying to fine tune my investing style to fit my needs.

1. Tell me more about yourself and how did you get started in investing or trading?

I am presently a Trading Rep in a local stockbroking firm, and had been in this industry for more than 16 years. I started investing in shares in my Uni days in the late 1990s when internet trading was just taking off. I was then intrigued by the constant movement of the share prices and thus opened a trading account. Of course, being inexperienced, I had my fair share of bad investments. That is when I started to realise the importance of doing my homework before investing.

1. Tell me more about yourself and how did you get started in investing or trading?

I have been a remisier/dealer for the past 10 years, looking to launch my own hedge fund in the near future. I taught myself candlesticks reading by reading 200 charts daily for more than a year till I was able to read charts by just having a glance.

In 2012, I was the winner in the Stockwhiz Investment Competition in the Professional level for the ETF Category in Sep 2012, beating all other Professionals in the Finance Industry participating in the competition.

Types of REITs in Singapore Market and The Breakdown of Key Financial Metrics

REITs are collective property investment trusts that pool money to invest in properties. Investors can purchase units of a REIT through the stock exchange.

Structure of how a REITs function:

REITs achieve separation of powers and duties by segregating the roles of ownership and management of the REIT assets between the Trustee and REIT Manager.

The trustee is responsible for the ownership and safe custody of the REIT’s assets. In exchange for providing the services, the trustee is paid a fee.

The REIT manager is just like the chief executive officer(CEO) of any listed company. The REIT manager is a separate company set up to run the REIT. It is usually a wholly-owned or partly-owned subsidiary of a REIT’s sponsor.
